Shamisen Lesson
About the Shamisen
The Shamisen (三味線) is a traditional Japanese three-stringed instrument known for its distinctive percussive sound and expressive playing style. With origins tracing back to 16th-century Okinawa, the shamisen has become integral to various Japanese musical genres, from kabuki theater to folk music.
Played with a large plectrum called a bachi, the shamisen produces a sharp, resonant tone that can convey both delicate melodies and powerful rhythms. Its unique sound comes from the combination of plucking the strings and striking the body of the instrument—a technique that requires both precision and energy.

Shakuhachi Lesson
About the Shakuhachi
The Shakuhachi (尺八) is a traditional Japanese bamboo flute with a unique, breathy tone that has captivated listeners for centuries. Originally introduced from China in the 6th century, the shakuhachi became deeply associated with Zen Buddhism and meditation practices, earning its place as one of Japan's most spiritually significant instruments.
With just five finger holes, the shakuhachi produces an extraordinarily wide range of sounds—from gentle, whisper-like tones to powerful, resonant melodies. Playing the shakuhachi requires mastery of breath control and subtle head movements, making it both a musical and meditative practice that connects the player to centuries of Japanese artistic tradition.
