箏(Koto)
The koto is a thirteen-string zither whose shimmering overtones evoke classical court music. Using small picks, players shape gliding bends and arpeggios that feel unmistakably Japanese— serene yet expressive. In our concerts, you’ll sit close enough to see the fingerwork and hear the natural resonance of paulownia wood.
History of Koto三味線(Shamisen)
The shamisen is a three-string lute played with a large plectrum (bachi). Its percussive snap and vocal-like slides power folk songs, theater music, and modern crossover. Up close, the dynamic attack and rhythmic drive are thrilling—perfect for music lovers who want something raw and energetic.
History of Shamisen尺八(Shakuhachi)
The shakuhachi is a bamboo flute known for its breathy, meditative timbre and subtle pitch shading. In a small hall you’ll hear the intimate details of breath and micro-tonal inflection—an experience that recordings can’t replicate, especially in Kyoto’s tranquil setting.
